TAWAS DIAGNOSTICS

Tawas are divination tools and rituals that come from ancient Philippine tradition. They are used to diagnose an affliction or psychological disorder by interpreting shapes produced in paper (papel), egg (itlog), or by molten wax droppings from a burning candle (kandila).

WHAT IS TAWAS DIAGNOSTICS?

Tawas Diagnostics have long been used and practiced in the Philippines, as a diagnostic and treatment modality. In rural areas of the Philippines, its use is in the purview of the Albularyo for a variety of conditions, or failure to thrive.  Tawas determines what causes the person to be physically, mentally, and/or spiritually ill or energetically blocked. Unlike typical medical diagnostics or check-ups, Tawas Diagnostics deals with illness on a supernatural level.

DURING A SESSION

I use three different varieties of Tawas Diagnostics (see below). In our time together, we'll discuss your current state of well-being, and I will determine the Tawas Diagnostics that would be appropriate for your needs.

tawas ng papel.jpg

PAPER / PAPEL

A piece of blank paper about 4x4 inches square is whispered with prayers (bulong), "crossed" over the body of the patient or over the area of affliction, and then examined for shadows or shapes that provide clues to the cause of the malady. This is often referred to as a "tawas x-ray."

EGG / ITLOG

A raw egg is cracked into a glass of water, and the glass is gently shaken. The egg white then breaks, and takes on unique and unpredictable forms. The egg white is examined for any change in shape, texture or movement that might suggest the nature of the illness.

KANDILA.jpg

CANDLE / KANDILA

Candle wax is slowly dripped into a container of water. The shapes taken by the candle wax on the water suggest the nature of the malady. Not infrequently, shapes of "dwende" (elves) or forms representing spirits are seen, and treatments are so directed.
