Mystic Goddess Sigils Tarot deck

THE MYSTIC GODDESS SIGILS TAROT

An original tarot deck born from a pilgrimage — designed, created, and published by Maria Haswell.

In February 2020, I returned to the Philippines for the first time in decades — my motherland, the land I was born into and left at age seven. What I found there changed me. The sacred symbols, the ancient Baybayin script, the ceremonial fabrics, the indigenous healers and mystics I sat with — all of it poured into something I hadn't planned: an original tarot deck.

The Mystic Goddess Sigils Tarot was published in 2021. Hundreds of copies have found their way into homes and hands across the United States and internationally. This is not a mass-produced deck. It is a creation guided by spirit, rooted in lineage, and made with intention from the first card to the last.

ABOUT THE DECK

The Mystic Goddess Sigils Tarot draws on the structure of the traditional Rider Waite Smith deck — but reimagines it entirely through the lens of my own spiritual journey, cultural heritage, and creative vision.

Instead of the traditional suits of pentacles, cups, wands, and swords, the deck is organized around the four elements — Earth, Water, Fire, and Air — with Spirit as the major arcana. The cards are my own unique designs, inspired by my travels in the Philippines, my studies in Peru and Bolivia, and the lessons, reflections, and experiences of a life lived in deep spiritual practice.

The creation of this deck was guided throughout by my spirit allies and ancestors. These are not just cards. They are transmissions.

WRITEN IN BAYBAYIN

On the reverse position of each card, the keywords are written in Baybayin — the pre-colonial writing script of the Philippines. Baybayin is an ancient script that was nearly lost during the colonization of the Philippines in the 18th and 19th centuries, suppressed almost to the point of extinction.

Including Baybayin on these cards is an act of reclamation and tribute — to my Filipino heritage, my culture, and the ancestors who carried this language before it was taken from them. The downloadable PDF Guidebook included with every deck also teaches you how to read and write in Baybayin, if you'd like to learn.

These symbols are more than beautiful. They carry profound and sacred meaning — capable of being read as everyday words and as deeply spiritual transmissions at the same time.

INSPIRED BY THE MALONG

The design on the back of every card was inspired by the ceremonial malong I wear when I perform sacred rituals and ceremonies. A malong is a traditional Filipino wraparound garment worn by the many ethnic groups of Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago — a piece of cloth that carries cultural identity, ancestral memory, and sacred meaning.

By placing this design on the back of every card, I wove my Filipino heritage into the foundation of the deck itself. Every time you hold these cards, you are holding something rooted in that tradition.

SIGILS & SYMBOLS

Throughout the deck I have incorporated sigils — symbols traditionally used in ritual magic that work directly with the subconscious mind. A sigil bypasses the rational, skeptical thinking mind and speaks directly to your intuition, helping you connect with the deeper meaning of each card on a level that goes beyond intellectual interpretation.

The sigils in these cards have been activated with intention — designed to communicate with you intuitively and help you develop your own direct connection with each card. Whether you are reading for yourself or for someone else, the symbols will speak to you in the way you need them to.
